New Upper East Side Farmers Market Opens Saturday

Melissa Contreras of Urban Oasis Project

A new farmers market is coming to the Upper East Side. It’s not the same Upper East Side market that used to exist some time ago. This one is organized by Terranova Corporation, a real estate company that owns Biscayne Plaza Shopping Center, where the market will be held. It will be managed by Melissa Contreras of Urban Oasis Project.

Melissa has been doing a great job managing the Liberty City Farmers Market on Thursdays so it’s good news that she’ll be bringing fresh, local produce to another location. She picks up produce from several local farmers and brings them to market, effectively reaching areas that may not be easy for farmers themselves to go to due to distance or manpower. Urban Oasis Projects also seeks to provide access to good food to everyone. For that reason, it accepts food stamps and matches up to $10 for people to spend on fruits and vegetables at the market.

The market opens this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a soft launch so don’t expect to find all the vendors yet, but you can expect to find local fruits, vegetables, local honey, fresh juices and prepared foods.
