South Beach Wine & Food Festival: The Burger Bash

Last night’s Burger Bash was a tale of two Michaels. Chefs Michael Schwartz and Michael Symon of B Spot had two of my favorite burgers of the night and, as you probably already know, both won top awards at the event. D and I each had one chip to cast our vote and I’ll confess each Michael got one.

Not going to SoBe Wine & Food Fest? Try these events [Updated]

It’s that time. Wine and food extravaganza. Invasion of Food Network celebrities. Crowds. The South Beach Wine & Food Festival kicks off today and goes through Sunday. There are still some tickets available if you’re interested, but if you’d rather stay away from the madness or from spending big bucks, here are a few things you can do as we head into the weekend.

Watch ‘The End of the Line’ at Sweat Records

Sweat Records will host the South Florida premiere of ‘The End of the Line,’ a documentary that explores the effects of overfishing, on Monday.
“Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing [...]

Cobaya Gras

When attending a Cobaya dinner, you never know what you’re in for. One day you may be at a Midtown penthouse practically drinking a Greek salad, and the next in someone’s backyard eating fried chicken. That was the case at the latest dinner, number four. The New Orleans-themed event was casual and laid back, more [...]

Ring in the Year of the Tiger

Two years ago I wrote a post on Chinese New Year celebrations in Miami at the request of a reader. Today, I received an email asking if those places would likely hold celebrations this year. So, once again thanks to a reader, here are a few options for Chinese New Year in Miami. Chinese New [...]

What’s in season? Conversation with Michael Schwartz at Locust Projects

I knew very little, nothing really, about Locust Projects until last night. The non-profit organization, whose mission is to provide a space for visual artists to experiment with new ideas, was hosting a conversation with chef Michael Schwartz in the Design District.

I sat on one of the pink hills that were part of an installation [...]

February food events

It’s time for February’s food events. Again, I’m doing this each month to highlight events that I think are interesting. If something comes up after I write this post, I’ll add it to the calendar (I’ve also added a link to the header).
Let’s get the big one out of the way first. The South Beach [...]

Choco-fest in pictures

I almost wish Fairchild Tropical Garden’s Chocolate Festival would’ve happened a few weeks ago during the cold spell. Hot, thick and spicy, Mayan chocolate would’ve been the perfect antidote to the cold. But despite the warmer weather I treated myself to a cup; it’s one of my favorite ways to enjoy chocolate. Thank goodness there [...]

Preview: Area 31’s Fish + Wine Dinner

Six weeks may seem like a long time but before you know it they’ll be gone and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival will be upon us. To coincide with the festival, Area 31’s chef John Critchley will be serving a four-course sustainable seafood dinner paired with wines selected by Master Sommelier Emily Wines [...]

Edible South Florida launch

Edible South Florida celebrated the launch of its first issue today at Whole Foods. Run and edited by Katie Sullivan, the quarterly magazine is part of Edible Communities and it chronicles local foods, farmers, growers and chefs. For those of you who like me haven’t previously lived somewhere with an Edible magazine, we’ve apparently been [...]

Getting to know Dragon Tongue beans

I’m not going to lie. It was the purple flecks. That’s what got me to buy these beans, known as Dragon Tongue or Dragon Langerie. The beans’ beautiful dappled exterior makes them hard to ignore as they sit among monochromatic green and yellow beans on the market stand.

As I paid for a bag at the [...]

Gables Market and other January food events (Updated)

I’m a little late with this month’s events but aside from Taste of the Grove, which I’m not a huge fan of, not much interesting seemed to be going on early in the month. The Coral Gables Farmers Market opens again this Saturday, January 16 across from City Hall (405 Biltmore Way). The market runs [...]

Caution: ‘Guerilla van’ coming to Design District

Remember One Ninety? Its chef, Alan Hughes, recently resurfaced with a brand new website and lots of interesting projects, including a one-table restaurant called Luuur, where the chef will cook you and your friends dinner. (Read my mini-interview with chef Hughes over at Short Order.) The chef’s latest newsletter, however, brought an intriguing piece of [...]

Lomo al trapo

One of my resolutions this year is to do a little more cooking. I’ve always liked to cook but last year I didn’t do nearly as much of it as I would’ve liked. This week’s project is “lomo al trapo,” which my dad and I made for D’s birthday last week.
