Now Rolling: Jefe’s Original Fish Taco & Burger

Dinner last night was supposed to be at a Middle Eastern restaurant in Sunny Isles, but plans quickly changed when D and I spotted Jefe’s Original Fish Taco & Burger parked next to Waggle Brothers as we drove on Biscayne Boulevard. Without hesitation, we swerved off Biscayne and onto the small parking lot.

It seems like we lucked out by running into the truck because while Jefe’s has Facebook and Twitter accounts, the truck’s locations haven’t been announced yet. Ed (@lax2mia) who arrived shortly after we did had spotted them a further south on  Biscayne just a little earlier.

The truck is bright orange and sports the logo and slogan “Vatos Making Tacos.” Music flows from its built-in speakers and once the sun started going down, lights built onto the side of the truck came on. A very friendly woman (didn’t get her name) greeted us and offered us menus. Without even looking I knew what I wanted to order. I love fish tacos, particularly those that I’ve tried on a couple of visits to California, so I was looking forward to trying these. D and I shared one of each item under the tacos section of the menu: a fish taco ($2.35 each), a carnitas taco ($2.35 each) and taquitos ($5.65 for three).

For the taquitos (pictured above), you have a choice between New Mexican chicken or a tender slow roasted pork. Since we already had slow roasted pork in the carnitas tacos, we chose the chicken. These hit the spot more so than the fish tacos. The chicken had good flavors, made only better by its crispy tortilla wrapping. And the chunky guacamole, pico de gallo and crema topping were a tasty addition that I ended up scooping up with a stir (no forks here).

For the Ensenada-style fish taco (there’s a whole story behind it), lightly beer-battered fish (grouper in this case) is served on two corn tortillas topped with shaved green cabbage, pico de gallo and homemade crema. Ours suffered from having too much crema but that didn’t seem to be the norm on the other fish tacos we saw going out.

Satisfied with our tacos, we were ready to leave when somehow a conversation got started and the truck’s owner, Jack, who hails from East LA, asked if we knew In-N-Out burger. “That’s what I have going on here,” he said. I have heard a lot of good things about In-N-Out but I’ve never eaten at one. D has, however, and after the exchange with Jack, it didn’t take him long to order an All American Cheeseburger ($4.65).

The burger was served with tomato, lettuce, pickle, onion and “Jefe’s own boss sauce.” D ordered it Miami Style, described on the menu as “extra everything, over the top with grilled onions” – a play, D says, on In-N-Out’s Animal Style. I took two bites to try it out and I can’t tell you if it’s like In-N-Out’s but it was a good, flavorful burger. As for D, he says Jefe’s came pretty darn close.

  1. The burger looked, smelled and tasted very similar to In n Out. Next time, I am getting the Double Double Miami Style with some fries that Ed said were outrageous.

  2. I stopped by this truck Friday after work. Ordered a fish taco, a carnitas taco and a burger. No excess crema on my fish taco and all the other flavors melded well. The fish itself was fried well and retained its own flavor. I liked the carnitas taco even more, both for the concentrated flavor of the meat and the sauce balance. The burger was pretty good but I think there are other more interesting burger options around these days. I will go back to try the taquitos next time and would also go back for the tacos, if the truck is again in a convenient location.

  3. Yeah, I think the crema on ours was just an isolated incident. Loved the roasted tomatillo sauce on the carnitas taco, too. I personally would also seek out the truck for the tacos because burgers abound around here and I tend not to eat burgers much anyway. But, if there for the tacos, I know the husband wouldn’t mind another burger. Ed mentioned the fries had fried capers in them. I’ll have to give those a try.

  5. Got two fish tacos and they were very good. Fish was cooked just right, pico de gallo was fresh, and got just the right amount of crema. Ask for the hot sauce, made with roasted chilis and without vinegar. It’s a scorcher, a little dab will do ya. Tried the guac, and it had too much lime juice, but otherwise the avocados were perfectly ripe. My only complaint is that the tacos are a bit small. Should have gotten three!

  6. I definitely have to try and find Jefe’s next time I am in the area of Biscayne. A little while back the Herald had an article about these hard-to-find food trucks. Needless to say, I still haven’t found one yet but thanks for the heads up!
