Eating our way to change? Food, Inc. opens in Miami this week

Food, Inc. movie

I realize it’s a bit early to be thinking about the weekend but I’ve been anticipating the opening of Food, Inc. this coming Friday at the Regal South Beach Cinemas. The documentary takes a hard look at the U.S. food industry, following the foods we eat and seemingly exposing some shocking truths about corporate food production and the consequences it has for the environment and our health.

The film was co-produced by Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, and features Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. So anyone who has read any of these books may already have an idea of what they may see in the film.

I’m not sure what to expect but I’m interested in the impact, if any, that the movie may have on the way we eat and the food we buy. Or the actions it could inspire me to take to help improve our food supply. If nothing else, based on some reviews I read over the weekend, the movie is sure to make me lose my appetite.

As a side (though not unrelated) note, the movie’s producers and other organizations, including Slow Food USA and its Miami chapter, are supporting a petition to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act come September. Take a moment to learn more about it and sign the online petition, which will help bring children healthier school lunches that include, among others hormone-free milk, fresh produce and whole grains.

  1. That movie sounds very interesting. I loved Fast Food Nation. Well, I use the word ‘love’ loosely since it was horrifying to read. So I’m definitely curious to see this!

  2. I can’t wait to see it. I really hope it changes how we view, process and eat food in this country.

  3. I’m completely intrigued, but at the same time petrified to see this movie. Do I really want to know where Costco chicken nuggets come from? Great post.

  4. [...] gearing up for dinner tonight at Michael’s. Tickets have been bought for tomorrow’s premiere of Food, Inc. Go watch it! And over the weekend, the Fruit and Spice Park will be hosting the Redland Summer [...]

  5. This movie just reinforces a lot of what we already know however it does add some new suprises.

I’m hoping that this movie has some impact on the people in America and that we will stand up and require some changes “for the better”.

It’s unfortunate that our government is controlled but so many people that only care about their own pockets rather than the well being of eachother.
