On the road: Cartagena’s mangoes

Mango vendor Cartagena

This is what I’ve talked about when I’ve mentioned eating green mango. I’m on vacation in Cartagena, Colombia and here, they sell it in little carts all around town. This man was somewhere on the wall that surrounds the old city in Cartagena.

In the steaming heat, the green mango is refreshing. It comes in little plastic bags, pit and all and is sprinkled — or more like coated — with salt. Then the man juices the lime by sliding it down the edge of his knife, dripping it into the bag.

We ate the mango as we walked around taking pictures and quickly discovered that we should’ve also bought an Aguila (Colombian beer) from the man standing beside the mango man, for this was one salty mango. Oh, but it was delicious.

  1. Ohhh…I love those mangoes…they are delish!!! I was raised on those since I was a little girl.

  2. Wow!

  3. I remember in Asia, people like to sprinkle salt on their fruit because they claim it brings out the sweetness. My mom did it especially to pineapple. Interesting he put so much on that it was too salty. You look like you’re having a wonderful rest, lucky you but well deserved.

  4. I am from India & we also eat green mangoes with sprinkled salt. It’s delicious. We also make chutneys from green mangoes. I never tried lime on green mangoes. Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it out. 😉

  5. In Puerto Rico this would be considered sacrilege! The only time I’ve seen mangoes in this state on the island is when we pickle them.

  6. I don’t think I’ve heard of green mangoes before! I thought they were just a different ripeness of the regular mangoes. I”ll have to keep my eye out for them in the gourmet grocery section.

My girlfriend introduced me to mangoes by splashing it with hot sauce and adding salt. I LOVE salt with mangoes.

  7. Mangos verdes!!! For the love of God! Oh my goodness… I was at the grocery store at 1 am trying to buy some b/c they were only $1 but they were all green…

I’m so glad they were good for you!!! It’s certainly my favorite fruit of all time!

  8. i am from Jamaica and this is how we eat green mangoes also, we also add some pepper at times, thank god i can get that here in NY anytime i feel the urge, lol

  9. […] I’ve been back from vacation for a few weeks now and, as always, I’m taking my time to get back into the swing of things. […]

  10. That sounds like a delicious mango. I’ve only ever had ripe mangoes.

  11. Recently I ate some green mango, tasted like soap , no flavor and its consistency was creamy. Is it normal, or the thing I bought was just rotten? I never ate mango before… and I am very disappointed of the one I tried.

  12. Maguito verde con sal y limon, una delicia! Has probado los corozos con sal (o en jugo)? esa tambien es una de mis frutas favoritas…umm que antojos 😛
