Away once again
This time in Chicago, so posting will be sparse to none. Be back soon!
Pretty little things
I’m a sucker for pretty little things. Pretty is subjective, I know, but there are some things that just meet the universal definition. Or maybe it’s just mine. Regardless, they make me feel all giddy inside.
In New York on Saturday, I had brunch at Prune and then visited Marie Belle, a chocolate store in Soho […]
Catching up
Back from New York. I hope to tell you all about that tomorrow. For now, a quick note on an interesting tidbit I missed while I was gone. You may have seen this in other blogs but let this serve as a reminder.
Plum Miami Beach is giving everyone a chance to be a food critic. […]
On leave…
In New York again until late Saturday so there won’t be much posting for the rest of the week. Be back next week!
One year of blogging
It’s been a year.
Reading my first post last night, I giggled a little, remembering my beginnings in the blogosphere. It all happened almost by chance. An email from a friend planted the seed in my head. I hesitated but when I realized there were few, if not any, food blogs in Miami, I took the […]
So you wanna be a wok star? (Updated)
I own a wok. An IKEA wok. And it’s been collecting dust at my parent’s house for about a year. I might have used it once or twice but I can’t say I had much success stir-frying. The secret, says Eleanor Hoh, is to stir-fry vegetables first, then protein, then sauce, each separately. We attended […]
Miami Spice: The Food Gang
Maybe it was my crappy day at work … On impulse I decided I wanted to go out for a nice dinner Tuesday. Almost as a reward to myself for having to withstand one of those very annoying workdays, I called The Food Gang and made reservations for two – not that we really needed […]
Miami Spice: Oceanaire
(When D told me he was going to Oceanaire for lunch today, I suggested he try their Miami Spice menu and let me know how it was. After all, this was one of the restaurants on my Miami Spice to-do list. But after he told me about his experience, I figured I’d just let him […]
Miami Spice? Not tonight
Had dinner at Sushi Samba tonight with a friend who was visiting from out of town and wanted to try their Miami Spice menu. Thing is, they weren’t offering it. Not until tomorrow, our waiter told us. My friend pointed out that Miami Spice started August 1. He said yeah, but we’re not starting until […]
To Do: Table 8, Azul, Ortanique…
Not like I’m breaking any news here, but today marks the beginning of Miami Spice. Looking back, I realized that last year’s Miami Spice was the topic of one of the earlier posts on this blog, which means mango&lime is almost one year old. Wow.
Dinner prices this year raised $5 and the lunch prices […]
There’s No Cake Like Home
Photos by Rachael Lee Coleman*
My friend Rachael and I arrived at Allie Herrera’s Miami Beach apartment last Monday knowing few things about her.
We knew that Allie, who is just starting out her cake business (the reason we were there to meet her), had been baking for more than 10 years and we knew she […]
Learn from the best at Plum Miami Beach
Ever wanted your favorite chefs to show you a thing or two in the kitchen? Plum Miami Beach — which has only been around for a month — has a really neat feature that takes us into some of Miami’s hottest kitchens to see how their chefs prepare a dish of their choice. The […]
Mango: The comfort fruit
Once during my brief stint in culinary school I applied for an internship at a New York food website. As a test, they asked me to write about a fruit or vegetable. I chose the mango and deemed it my comfort fruit. I wrote of memories of hot beach days biting into a ripe mango […]
The state of South Florida dining
The topic keeps coming up. Not long ago I posted about a Chowhound discussion on the changes in some South Florida restaurant menus to accommodate taste. The discussion about recent restaurant closings has also been kicking for some time on Chowhound and others. Today’s Herald takes a look at the situation.
South Florida fancies itself as […]
How Publix killed the Food Network star in me
Yesterday after a lazy afternoon watching The Next Food Network Star marathon, I was inspired to cook and headed to Publix to pick up some ingredients for the chicken tabouleh salad I wanted to make. What a mood killer.
As usual on a Sunday, the store was packed but it has never been so unbearable. […]
My first slow food dinner
Last night I went to a Slow Food Miami dinner at North One Ten. I signed up not really knowing what to expect, but I had read about the slow food movement and was curious to find out more. Lucky for me, the theme of the meal was mangos — which reminds me, stay tuned […]
Are Miami diners ‘dumbing down’ menus?
Interesting discussion going on at Chowhound this week about the changes some Miami restaurants have made to their menus or wine lists to satisfy the Miami diner’s palate and taste. Florida hounds are looking for a phrase for what they call the dumbing down of menus to satisfy the uneducated South Florida diner. Based on […]
Casa Mono (New York)
I chose Casa Mono. You know, for my one New York meal. I ditched the daring and picked this self-dubbed Spanish tavern, mainly because we wanted to make our New York night entertaining. Somehow tapas are more fun than a regular dinner — maybe it’s the sharing and picking at different foods. Adam Platt put […]

One meal in New York
I’m in New York City today and tomorrow. Work, not pleasure, but here’s a chance to have one great meal: Dinner tonight. Not that I’ll be fasting, but the other meals will be provided to me. So I sit here facing the tough decision of where I’ll have my one New York meal. It’s not […]
