You gotta love friends. The kind that make you laugh, help you out, care for you; the kind that on your birthday surprise you with a mango cake and tell you about their unsuccessful efforts to find little limes to put on it. Hey, thought’s what counts. And I loved my birthday cakes.
They were from Karlo Bakery, a little bakery on Coral Way know for its variety of croquetas and fresh baked goods. This was my first time trying their cakes.
There was mango cake and there was chocolate cake. I can only speak first-hand about the mango cake, a combination of mango mousse and regular cake. It was a real treat, the mousse sweet and a little tart. Being the mango lover that I am, well, I was thrilled. I didn’t try the chocolate cake but people liked it and said it was light and not overly sweet. I can see why they were named best birthday cake in the Miami New Times Best Of.
But better than the cakes were my friends’ stories about their attempts to give me a mango — and almost lime — cake. You just gotta love ‘em.
