How I learned to cook

collage2.jpg

Soon after I started this blog, my best friend gave me a book called “How I Learned To Cook,” a collection of stories by some very well-known chefs about how or when they learned to cook. While reading it, I asked myself: how did I learn to cook? I don’t think I ever came up with a concrete answer; I couldn’t put my finger on one moment that marked when I felt I knew how to cook. But I do know that the women in my life have been a huge influence in my cooking. It may sound cliché. There are plenty of stories about those who grew up watching a mom or grandmother for hours in the kitchen and then became talented cooks. That wasn’t me. It wasn’t that clear-cut. What I have are scattered cooking memories with my mom, my grandma and my godmother. Those memories make my culinary conscience. And today, as Mother’s Day comes to an end, I wanted to thank those women for them.
