Bites: This week in food (5/7-5/11)

FRIDAY
Wendy’s named top fast food chain

That’s what a Zagat survey on food chains concluded. Wendy’s received the following distinctions in the mega-chain category: Best Burger, Top Facilities, Top Food and Top Overall. McDonald’s took away the Best Fries. The Top Food and Top Overall award in the full service chain restaurant category went to Outback Steakhouse. Best Facilities and Best Service to Cracker Barrel. La Panera Bread took away most of the distinctions in the fast food “all chains”category. Interesting!

THURSDAY

… Nothing to report …

WEDNESDAY
Don’t believe the five-second rule

Eat food dropped and picked up within five seconds and you’re safe? Not so, say researchers who actually studied the five-second rule. Quick retrieval does mean fewer bacteria, but it’s no guarantee of safety, according to The New York Times. Well, when you add e.Coli and salmonella to your test floors, of course not.

TUESDAY
Colombia bans coca leaf drink

Colombian president Alvaro Uribe banned Coca-Sek, an energy drink that contains coca leaf extracts, and other natural coca products from store shelves. The drink’s makers, the Nasa Indian tribe, suspect the ban was the result of pressure from Coca-Cola, which sued them for trademark infringement. Coca-Cola neither confirmed nor denied that coca extract is part of their secret recipe citing, well, the secrecy of the recipe.

MONDAY

  1. Naming Wendy’s as top fast food restaurant is like naming WM-http://www.wm.com/- as the best trash disposal service!
-“The take away my trash bags and they make them disappear! I’m not sure how they do it”-A senior resident from Miami Beach stated.

Why is it more expensive to eat healthy food than unhealthy ?
    What’s the catch ?
    It’s because food subsidies ?

  2. i just found out about your blog through “stuck on the palmetto.” i’m so happy i did because i think it’s just great.

looking forward to reading more in the future!

  3. If I drop a dollar-value bacon double on the floor at Wendy’s and eat it in 5 minutes will it still be good? Maybe a question for the Herald’s food critic. Shame about Coca-Sek, could have spiked a Frosty.

  4. Correction: the New Times food critic.

  5. …because the Herald food critic wouldn’t eat anything off the floor. But the New Times guy…he just might!
