Kamikaze Happy Hour

sushi1.gifOn Sunday night, I went out not for cocktails, but for half-price sushi rolls at Sushi Square on 72nd and Biscayne. Order before 7:30 p.m. and any roll on the menu is half price. This used to be just a Sunday special, which is why I insisted we go — I didn’t want to wait another week — but I was pleased to find out they now offer their Kamikaze Happy Hour (no, I didn’t make up that name) every day.

A friend introduced me to Sushi Square last year and I immediately loved it. The place is small, with a clean, modern decoration. And for the quality of the food, it’s affordable even when it’s not happy hour. The place is owned by two French brothers, who moved to Miami from New York and are almost always there (Sunday was actually the first time I went when they weren’t.)

Sushi Square’s rolls aren’t typical. Take the Key West ($7.50), for instance. Lime-marinated salmon with chives, cilantro pesto and pear. Or the Julienne ($14.00) — shrimp, cream cheese and pickled jalapeno baked with fire mayo, parmesan garlic and bagel crumbs. (I’ve never ordered this one but I saw it at another table on Sunday and it’s next on my list.) Not exactly what you find at every sushi restaurant. On Sunday, I ordered the BT roll ($9.00) — spicy salmon, asparagus and cucumber, topped with tuna and avocado — and the Sunset roll ($6.00), shrimp, mango and asparagus with Thai curry mayonnaise. My dining partner ordered a California roll ($6.00).

We finished dinner with their Charlotte Cake. It’s like a three-part dessert. In one small dish, you have warm chocolate cake with a liquid interior; in the other, vanilla ice cream topped with almonds, and in a shot glass, fresh sliced strawberries.

Our check was $26 and change. That included an order of edamame and a Kirin light. Not so bad, right?

If you go, and you like sake, they have a great selection. I’m not a big fan, but I’ve liked the ones I’ve tried there. I usually just settle for the complimentary shot they give you with your check.

  1. We stopped by Sushi Square this past Saturday night before hitting the Wynwood gallery walk..we were early ( 530p ) and famished. We parked in back and walked thru what we thought was the garden entrance. Started talking to two guys standing in the garden and learned that 1.Sushi Square wasn’t open yet 2. the garden itself is it’s own destination, an outdoor “lounge” with bar service chairs/tables/sofas set amidst a landscaping business that also has a miniature golf course and an outdoor movie screen where they show double feature films on Thursday nights … what a wonderful little treat! We couldn’t wait for Sushi Square to open ( went down the road to Uva for a wonderful fish sandwich and salad ) but thought you might like to check out the garden on the side some night…

  2. I actually forgot to mention the garden. That garden had been for rent for the longest time and the last time we were there, we saw it was nicely decorated and the waiter told us about the Thursday movie night. I’ll have to check it out. Sorry you didn’t make it to Sushi Square. I believe they open at 6, but definitely give it a try. Maybe on a Thursday so you can try out the garden.

PS: Good choice with UVA. I was there on Friday and it is one of my most frequented places. The fish sandwich, called La Minuta, and the pork entree are their best dishes.

  3. You are so right about this place! It had been a while since I went to a good sushi restaurant in Miami mainly b/c they’re all so expensive and really not worth the money. Very sad situation for a sushiphile.
Sushi Square is delicious, the service gracious and the half prices before 7:30pm make nice nice with my wallet.
P.S. The chef’s and wait staff are gorgeous (and male.) Woot Woot
