Miami Spice

I picked a good time to start this blog. August and September are good months for dining in Miami as the city offers what’s known as Miami Spice, or Miami restaurant month (even though it’s really two). For a very reasonable $30.06 - at least considering where you can eat - you can have a three-course dinner at any of the participating restaurants. For me, it’s a great way to try those restaurants that may be a bit too pricey to visit regularly. Some places also have lunch menus for $20.06 sans tax and tip, of course.

A suggestion: pick where you go based on the Miami Spice menu, not the restaurant. It sounds obvious but each year I’m tempted to go to the restaurants that are buzzing around town instead of to those with the best menus.

I haven’t taken advantage of this year’s program yet but I already have a few restaurants in mind.

Chef Allen’s menu has to be among my top picks with dishes like Key Lime Mojo Grilled Free Range Chicken with Roasted Yuca, Cilantro Pesto and Pigeon Pea Rice and a Bahamian Lobster and Crab Cake with Vanilla Bean Beurre Blanc and Tropical Fruit Chutney among its three appetizer options. Yum!

Social Miami also has an interesting menu. Here, I will confess that I’m also curious about the concept. The Social serves only small plates designed to be shared by two or three people. Each person gets a choice of three from its Miami Spice menu.

Stay tuned…

  1. oh yes, i’m staying tuned all right, staying tuned for your plantains tips and other quick-easy latin favorites at home for the latin cook dummy. because, when you are in new york, Miami Spice doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot for a guy, ya dig?

  2. Social Miami seems very attractive try. Cold Peruvian Ceviche, or the Shrimp and Coconut Ceviche.. I will toss the coin..

  3. Congratulations! This is great…especially for those far away from home…the food I def. miss…and this will be an avenue that will make this place feel like a new home a little more…

  4. What’s up P? Here’s the blog entry I’ve been promising you for weeks. Be gentle, it’s my first time. First off, Congratulations on the site, I think it’s great. Second, I’m publicly apologizing for not being able to include you in my adventure to Azul for lunch.

My adventure to Azul began with the Corvina Ceviche, Aji Amarillo, Tostones, Avocado appetizer (Good Stuff). The main course was the Cornmeal Crusted Flounder, Andouille & White Bean Ragu, Shrimp Remoulade (The beans on this dish were the biggest I’ve ever seen). And finally for dessert the Lemon Cream Cheese Sponge Cake, Fresh Raspberries, Strawberry Mint Sorbet, it hit the spot. Presentation was cool and everything tasted great, Azul passed the test. You really can’t get a meal like that, in that atmosphere for $20.06 (Plus the $3.00 Diet Coke) anywhere in Miami unless it’s Miami Restaurant Month. I’ll try to keep you posted on my MRM adventures.

  5. Yum! Not fair. I have to really get going on my Miami Spice rounds, but with traveling and work I haven’t been able to get started. Azul is the restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key. It’s perhaps best known, at least by me, because well-known Miami Chef Michelle Bernstein was chef there. Here’s Azul’s Miami Spice lunch menu (they don’t offer dinner.)

  6. […] of Miami Spice. Looking back, I realized that last year’s Miami Spice was the topic of one of the earlier posts on this blog, which means mango&lime is almost one year old. […]
